A rock band with violins and a cello. Most people have shown mixed reactions to this mixture; some are amazed, some are doubtful, some are just plain interested. Truly, the sight of these classical instruments side-by-side with electric guitars is not really common. However, the truth is, this group of young individuals is just like any other band - they are set in making good music and sharing it to others. This is Silent Sanctuary.

The band has been around the local music scene for quite sometime now. Though their kind of music has evolved through the years due to a couple of evolutions to their line-up, they are still able to maintain a certain sound that is very Silent Sanctuary. Armed with catchy guitar riffs and heart-pounding melodies from the violins, the band has invaded numerous bars, schools, and other performance venues with the passion to share their music.

Summer Song by Silent Sanctuary
Summer Song Lyrics:

I
Magkatabi tayo sa duyan
Sa ilalim ng buwan
Buhangin sa ating mga paa
Ang dagat ay kumakanta

Matagal naring magkakilala
Minahal na kita
Simula pa nung una
Unang makita ang iyong mga mata

Sana ay huwag ng matapos tong
Pagibig na para lamang sa iyo

I
(Rap by Sarkie)
Tuwing ika’y nalulungkot
Nandito lang ako pangako ko sa’yo
Hindi kita iiwan
Huwag kang mag-alala (huwag kang mag-alala)
Gusto mo ng beer ililibre kita (sige na, sige na, sige na)
Basta’t ika’y kasama, di ako nangangamba
Kislap ng yong mata tibok ng puso’y sumaya

Ikaw lang ang aking mamahalin
Hanggang sa langit ikaw ay dadalhin
Tara na, tara na, tara na

Sana ay huwag ng matapos tong
Pagibig na para lamang sa iyo

[Chorus:]
(Gusto kong) Tumalon, tumalon sa saya dahil
Ikaw ang kapiling
Sa iyo, sa iyo, sa iyo, sa iyo lamang
Ang puso ko
Sumayaw, sumayaw, sumayaw, tayo
Sa ilalim ng araw

Magkatabi tayo sa duyan
Sa ilalim ng buwan
Buhangin sa ating mga paa
Ang dagat ay kumakanta

Matagal naring magkakilala
Minahal na kita
Simula pa nung una
Unang makita ang iyong mga mata

Sana ay huwag ng matapos tong
Pagibig na para lamang sa iyo

(Gusto kong) Tumalon, tumalon sa saya dahil
Ikaw ang kapiling
Sa iyo, sa iyo, sa iyo, sa iyo lamang
Ang puso ko
Sumayaw, sumayaw, sumayaw, tayo
Sa ilalim ng araw

Rebound - Silent Sanctuary

Rebound by Silent Sanctuary

Rebound - Lyrics

O kay bilis naman
Magsawa ng puso mo
Ganyan ka ba talaga
Bigla nalang naglalaho

Para bang walang nangyari
Di mo man lang sinabi

Sana’y hindi nalang pinilit pa
Wala ring patutungahan
Kahit sabihin ko pang
Mahal kita

Nalulungkot, nayayamot, nagmumukmok
Hindi ko pa yata kaya pang
Labanan ang damdamin ko

Nakakainis talaga
Nagmuhkha tuloy akong tanga
Pinaasa mo kasi
Puso ko ngayon tuloy lumuluha

Dahil iniwan mo kong mag-isa
Limang araw lang ay babay na

Sana’y hindi nalang pinilit pa
Wala ring patutungahan
Kahit sabihin ko pang
Mahal kita

Nalulungkot, nayayamot, nagmumukmok
Hindi ko pa yata kaya pang
Labanan ang damdamin ko

Rebound mo lang pala ako...

Sana’y hindi nalang pinilit pa
Wala ring patutungahan
Kahit sabihin ko pang
Mahal kita

Hay Nako by Silent Sanctuary

Listen to Hay Nako:

Hay Nako Lyrics:

I

Ganyan nanaman
Di ka ba
Nagsasawang
Paiyakin ang damdamin ko
Nagtatampo na tuloy ako sa iyo
Alam mo naman
Na kahit na
Ilang beses mo na akong nasasaktan
Di ko maisip na ika'y iwanan
May itatanong ako sayo
Sabihin ng totoo
Mahal mo ba talaga ako

Chorus:
Hay nako
Pag-ibig nga naman minsa'y talagang
Napakagulo
Hindi mo malaman
Kung pano nga ba sumuko
Hay nako
Baka mapagod na ang
Aking pusong umibig sayo
Hay nako

II
Wala naman akong ibang magawa
Kundi intindihin
Ang mga pangako mong palpak parin
kaya't wag mo na sana
Pang ulit-ulitin 'to
Baka magalit na ako
Konti na lang malapit ka
Nang buminggo
Mag-isip-isip ka na ngayon
Kong nais mo talaga akong
Magtagal sa piling mo

Hay nako
Pag-ibig nga naman minsa'y talagang
Napakagulo
Hindi mo malaman
Kung pano nga ba sumuko
Hay nako
Baka mapagod na
Ang aking pusong umibig sayo
Hay nako
Hay nako

May itatanong ako sayo
Sabihin ng totoo
Mahal mo ba talaga ako
Mahal mo ba talaga ako...

Hay nako
Pag-ibig nga naman minsa'y talagang
Napakagulo
Hindi mo malaman
Kung pano nga ba sumuko
Hay nako
Baka mapagod na
Ang aking pusong umibig sayo
Umibig sayo
Hay nako
Hay nako...

Universal Records proudly brings to you Fuchsiang Pag-Ibig the new album from UR ’s latest addition to it’s rich roster of recording artists Silent Sanctuary. The album is comprised of twelve original compositions, including the current single “Ikaw Lamang,” which is steadily rising in radio charts nationwide.

The band is composed of Anjo Inacay on cello, Chino David on violins, Allen Calixto on drums, Paolo Legaspi on bass and Sarkie Sarangay on guitars and lead vocals. Their new album is a curious combination of catchy rock-influenced pop and classical string arrangements. Make no mistake though, the classical strings do add a new dimension to their sound; unlike other contemporary bands foreign and local whose attempts at bringing in violinists are merely ornamental at best. From the aforementioned single “Ikaw Lamang” to the engaging album opener “Rebound” to the funny and witty love ditty “Pink 5ive” to the universally appealing closer “14,” Fuchsiang Pag-Ibig could very well be the breakthrough album for this St. Scholastica-based group.

The band started out during their first few years in college with a Anjo and Chino jamming with other musicians. Their original lead singer Norman was the anchor behind the songwriting; coming up with an independently released album entitled Ellipsis of the Mind. The album had a dark mood to it; which inspired the band name. Some of the original members left one by one for various reasons, until Norman had to leave as well.

The remaining members then conducted auditions. Sarkie auditioned both as guitarist and lead vocalist; but he was initially accepted as a guitarist only. Things didn’t work out so well with the lead vocalist that was initially hired so Sarkie asked his bandmates if he they were open to the idea of trying him out on lead vocals. Soon enough, Sarkie charted a new musical direction which was lighter and bordering more on the pop side.

“My only musical influences are the Eraserheads, Rivermaya, Smashing Pumpkins, mga mainstream talaga,” Sarkie notes. “Yun yung mga tipo kong kanata , melodic at madaling na-relate-an.”

“Our first independent album was conceived mainly for ourselves,” Anjo explains. “We wanted to go to another phase, because yung dark moods kasamang sumama with our original lead vocalist. This time we wanted to write and play music not only for ourselves but for whoever wants to listen and give us a try. We tried to do a more symphonic sound where musically makikita mo sa mga songs na there are a lot of things happening at the same time na at the same time hindi nagsasapawan. Mas madaling pumasok ang ideas, dahil siguro ito yung music na talagang kami. Nakahanap kami ng common ground.”

And the band persevered until they managed to master that cohesive feel and write new songs in the process. They eventually found a new management in One Big Family (same management as Itchyworms and Ciudad), bagged an NU Rock Award as In the Raw awardees (for being the best unsigned band of 2006) and a major label record deal with Universal Records. They soon obtained the new songs they recorded at a different studio and finished it at Sonic State with Robert Javier and Jonathan Ong (whose promising resume includes Orange and Lemons Strike Whilst the Iron Is Hot.

“We settled on the album Fuchsiang Pag-Ibig not only because of the wordplay but because naisip naming ang love puedeng kulay fuchsia kasi parang depende sa tumitingin kung masaya or malungkot ang kulay,” says Anjo. “The album is basically about the joys and sorrows that come with love.”

With Fuchsiang Pag-Ibig, you’ll find an album filled with the many faces of love as interpreted by a bunch of guys who love music.

Silent Sanctuary History

Silent Sanctuary started as a rock trio composed of Norman Dellosa (vocals, guitars), Paolo Legaspi (bass), and Allen Calixto (drums) in 2001. Norman, always intrigued by the fusion of rock and classical music, invited his high school classmate, Anjo Inacay – a cellist – to jam with them after a few months of the band’s conception. This innovation was well received by the audience during gigs, thus from then on, he became the fourth member of the group.

When the band was invited to guest for NU 107’s TV station UnTV’s In the Raw later that year, Anjo asked Jett Ramirez, his fellow orchestra member, to create string arrangements for them. They then invited more string instrumentalists from the orchestra to jam for that episode. One of the violinists, Chino David, and Jett, a violist, were invited to be part of the band.

Since then, Silent Sanctuary has been invited to play in numerous concerts such as the UP Peace Camp in 2003; the Martial Law Anniversary concert in Ayala; different concerts during the UP Fair; campus events in schools such as St. Paul College Pasig, St. Scholastica’s College Manila, Ateneo de Manila University, De La Salle University, Don Bosco Makati, University of Asia and the Pacific; various media events for MTV Ink and Spam Jam; performances for RX93.1’s Concert Series in 2003 and 2004; and many other productions for Admit1, Last Full Show. They are often found in bars such as Big Sky Mind in New Manila, Freedom Bar in Quezon City, Mayrics in Espana, Saguijo Bar in Makati, and the like. They were recently featured in an episode of MTV Lokal.

With this lineup, the band hit the studios in the middle of 2003 to independently produce their own full length album, Ellipsis of the Mind. It was released last February 2004 in Millenia Bar and Cafe in Kamuning.

Now with a new and revitalized line-up, Silent Sanctuary is composed of Anjo (cello), Chino (violin),, Sarkie Sarangay (guitar and vocals), Paolo (bass), and Allen (drums).

About Silent Sanctuary

Silent Sanctuary is a band composed of Sarkie Sarangay (guitars, vocals), Anjo Inacay (cello), Chino David (violin), Paolo Legaspi (bass) and Allen Calixto (drums). Their unique blend of classical string instruments with more contemporary band set-ups (electric guitar, drum and bass) makes them a stand out among other bands. Their second album, Fuchsiang Pag-Ibig helped them make a mark in the growing band scene in the country.

Band Answer on the Interview regarding their Band Name:

"Silent Sanctuary is a place of refuge, it's a place where you are alone with your thoughts. A place where you can find comfort and strength. Everybody has how or her own silent sanctuary, it's just a matter of finding which one is yours. In our case, it's music. And it's through this music that we hope we can also give to others their silent sanctuary."

Silent Sanctuary never fails to capture first their audiences attention then their hearts. Their repertoire offers a variety of songs destined to make one ride a rollercoaster of emotions from the exhilaration of loving to the melancholy of heartbreak, from the delight of a summer day to the misery of a dark gloomy night. The music of this five-piece band brings to surprising fruition the eclectic combination of their varied influences. Guitarist and vocalist Sarkie Sarangays Bob Marley influence is showcased in the header-bopping Summer

Song, while shades of Dace Matthews can be discerned from drummer Allen Calixtos and bassist Paolo Legaspis grooves. Aside from being classically trained in their respective instruments, cellist Anjo Inacay and violinist Chine Davids sounds are heavily laden by the edginess of OPM idols The Eraserheads, the creativity of Apocalyptica and Yo Yo Ma, and the ingenuity of Stephane Grapelli.
